Port Coquitlam Beautiful Fraser River is running down the middle of the wide Fraser Valley, forcing travellers to choose between its south or north banks. The town of Port Coquitlam, with population of 56,000 people, is situated in the North Fraser Valley, just along the Pitt and Fraser Rivers, becoming a geographical centre for the Lower Mainland. The town of Port Coquitlam (also called PoCo) is situated on either side of the Lougheed Hwy (#7), providing an easy westbound access to Vancouver only 30 kilometres away, which will take you just 40 minutes by commuter rail or 30 minutes by road, as well as eastbound access to the fast evolving Fraser Valley.

Major part of the valley land is rural, providing great opportunities for outdoor recreations, farming, and forestry. The town’s central location and convenient setting creates an incredibly exceptional environment for living and recreation. The town of Port Coquitlam is outlined by the Coquitlam River on the west, scenic Coast Mountains on the north (including Coquitlam and Burke Mountains), the Pitt River on the east, and the Fraser River on the south. The Fraser Estuary and the Fraser Valley differ with the mountains that are situated much closer to the towns of Port Coquitlam and neighbouring Coquitlam.

The north-western part of the Fraser Valley is graced with picturesque peaks rising up in the little prairie protected from floods by the dikes. The nearest communities are Port Moody and Coquitlam, located to the west of the city. The town’s name comes from the Salish “Kwayhquitlum”, which means red fish in the river, linking to the annual salmon spawning run in Fraser River. The town of Port Coquitlam was incorporated in the beginning of twentieth century, just 2 years after the country’s Pacific Railway Company had transferred its freight operations there from Vancouver. In ninety years, the rail yard became the largest CPR yard in B.C.
